Les Cole, "The Great Levante" (1892-1978), turned professional by 1910, working in Australian country touring shows and New Zealand with an escapology act. He performed for many years in England, returning to Australia at the outbreak of WWII. Levante was awarded both the Performing Fellowship and the Masters Fellowship by the Academy of Magical Arts. He was considered to be superior to Houdini.
