Virgil World Famous Magician. Madras: Rangam Bros., ca. 1960.

Virgil: World Famous Magician and Company, who was born in 1900 and began his career in the 1920s, this circa 1950s magic show poster used to advertise Virgil the Magician ("Gigantic Stage Spectacle!"; "World Tour Direct From America!" Virgil began his career in vaudeville in 1925. By 1952 he was touring his 33-ton show consisting of 20 illusions, 120 costumes, and 19 full sets of scenery to New Zealand as the start a world tour which lasted five years; touring Australia, Tasmania, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, India, England and Ireland until 1957.

And and his wife and assistant Julie retired from magic in 1978.

Colorful panel size poster depicts Virgil and Julie's portraits above a depiction of "The Great Cannon Mystery," Virgil's version of the famous Triple Trunk illusion so popular with magicians of the first half of the twentieth century. 13 ¼ x 30 ¼".
